Construction - First draft music video and evaluation

First Draft Music video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5AxQoGOSd4

For my first draft music video i used the camera Cannon EOS 4000D. The advantages of using a DSLR camera rather than a mobile device such as an iPhone is DSLR cameras come with an advantage because they have a lens with variable focal length and aperture. It allows them to regulate the amount of light that enters the camera thereby ensuring images of better quality. Smartphone cameras have auto focusing lenses. They can be slow at times and experience shutter lag meaning they do not produce as high quality products as they regulate their own settings not chosen settings like you would be able to with a camera. I then edited on the software Adobe premier pro. I wanted my music video to follow the synopsis i have already planned of The narrative of my music video follows two youths in a relationship and them both separately. The video includes the male and female spending time together showing reckless behaviour including short montage clips transferring between the relationship of the couple to the female alone and empowered without the man to the couple being reckless together as well as the pair being together closely followed by one of the character going out of camera range to represent the loss of the partner within the relationship. Leaving the audience to question what will happen next in the video or what happened for this to take place(Barthes enigma code).Due to the video being a montage it will not have a beginning , middle or end opposing to Todrov’s theory revolving the stages of equilibrium. Following the stages of how the male was a bad influence on the female and the male having the stereotypical bad guy characteristics to match that statement. Shown in my music video with the male driving at a high speed which will link to lyrics to the visuals (Goodwin) as the lyrics say “We're riding down the boulevard. We're riding into the dark night, night. With half the tank and empty heart "As well as the female wearing revealing clothing and having a seductive attitude both towards the male and a result of direct mode of address towards the camera conforming the stereotypical gender roles (Van Zoonen) shown with the scene of the female with the lip balm giving a direct mode of address. The media language will represent the mis en scene such as low lighting to accentuate the theme of rebellious teens and how Youths to express themselves and to challenge hegemony the role of media representations in society (Hebdidge). From my brief i was also told to follow a pop artist music video i chose Ocean Drive as it is considered as the artist Duke Demount is considered as a pop artist DJ as he uses upbeat tempos and uses a narrative within his music not just sound like other DJs. Following the codes and conventions of Pop music videos i used close ups regarding camera work , bright colours regarding mis en scene such as the ongoing theme of red and the editing of the footage matches the music or the beat shown with the montage of footage and black screen short cuts.

The first shot of my music video is a wide shot of the cars in Harlow at night through the use of the panning shot. I also increased the speed of the next couple of sections revolving the panning shots of the cars. I did this by right clicking on the clip i wanted then choosing speed/duration then i was able to move the percentage higher and lower as well as adding a ripple effect or reverse speed which i did throughout the video such as the slow motion of the walking in the car park shown in the time frame of 35 seconds within the video.

Fast motion clip of the cars at the start of the music video.

Camera work - Using my camera to make the audience feel like they are seeing from the protagonists perspective.

Throughout my music video is used short fast motion clips to create a sense of a montage of activities the individual is taking to travel to the girl who wants to meet therefor it still has a narrative aspect. By using a montage effect for my video it displays short pieces of information that are being edited together to become a bigger picture in a montage. By starting in one spot and ending in another, you’re letting the viewer follow the journey from start to finish. A character can evolve for the better (or the worse) and a plan can be described and/or shown in detail, just by visuals showing the change over time such as seeing the protagonist with and without a love interest.Events are still happening in order — they’re just on a much more truncated timeline, allowing scenes that would take the entire running time to happen in mere minutes. I also tried to compose a narrative through the use of my camera work from 43 seconds to 50 seconds i used my camera to make it look like the audience were seeing what the protagonist was seeing from their perspective i did this by not using a tripod and holding out the camera as i walked to create this effect so the audience feel like they are apart of the story. My draft music video is very basic as it lacks special effects however i am happy with the clips i have produced without the effects. In my final music video i will add title pages and special effects to make the music video stand out more and unique compared to others that are produced.
