Music video editing
What i wanted to convey through the use of editing
The narrative of my music video follows two youths in a relationship and them both separately. The video includes the male and female spending time together showing reckless behaviour including short montage clips transferring between the relationship of the couple to the female alone and empowered without the man to the couple being reckless together as well as the pair being together closely followed by one of the character going out of camera range to represent the loss of the partner within the relationship. Leaving the audience to question what will happen next in the video or what happened for this to take place(Barthes enigma code).Due to the video being a montage it will not have a beginning , middle or end opposing to Todrov’s theory revolving the stages of equilibrium. Following the stages of how the male was a bad influence on the female and the male having the stereotypical bad guy characteristics to match that statement. Such as the male driving at a high speed on a motorway which will link to lyrics to the visuals (Goodwin) as the lyrics say “We're riding down the boulevard. We're riding into the dark night, night. With half the tank and empty heart "As well as the female wearing revealing clothing and having a seductive attitude both towards the male and a result of direct mode of address towards the camera conforming the stereotypical gender roles (Van Zoonen). The media language will represent the mis en scene such as low lighting to accentuate the theme of rebellious teens and how Youths to express themselves and to challenge hegemony the role of media representations in society (Hebdidge).
River overlay with protagonist female
Title
The first effect i used in my music video was the opening credits to introduce the song and the artist. My titles stated "Ocean Drive By M-Sea" with four separate title pages i created on premiere pro. I used footage of cars at night and cars by the ocean to connect to theme of my music video. I then imported the chosen footage of the cars into Premiere and placed it on the V1 layer of your sequence. I then used the Graphics work space and click the on the text tool. Add the name of my titles and place the text above the area the frame i want to see shown above with the word "Drive" which was placed in V2 with my chosen footage in the V1 section of my editing software. I then wanted to make sure my title pages were central by the using the adjustment features in premiere pro where it made my title central both horizontally and vertically.I then added a solid black rectangle and extended it so it filled the screen creating the black ground by changing the opacity to multiply it created the transparent writing with my desired video inside. With some of the clips i adjusted the positioning and scaling in the effects control panel so the desired section of the clip was shown through the transparent writing as well as adjusting font. I used the font Gill sans ultra bold and adjusted the size of my font to make it fill the screen so the audience could see as much of the video footage as possible. As well as extending the length of the graphic to match my clip. This effect was used in my opening credits and throughout the video with the repetition of the lyrics "Hold On" therefore i repeated these steps several times to create various title pages as shown above.
Speed/Duration
Throughout my music video i changed the speed/duration of various clips to create different effects. To do this i right clicked on the footage i wanted to change the duration of then clicked on the "Clip Speed/Duration" panel. When i did this it presented the box shown above where i was able to change the speed and see the duration as a result
Within my music video i used overlays throughout to create dramatic effect and fit the theme of my music video of a urban pop narrative. This is shown in the clip when the protagonist can see the females face in the river. To do this i filmed two separate clips including one of the female and one of the river. I then placed the footage of the female above the footage of the river reducing the opacity to 36% therefore it looks like the females face is a reflection in the river. I also added the transition cross dissolve to the video of the female at both ends of the clips to make the overlay and effect smoother in the way the female doesn't suddenly appears and gradually enters the clip. I also used this effect for the scene with the candle and the female getting ready to meet the protagonist male. However i made made the opacity higher as it wasnt creating an illusion like the river and the audience will know the overlay is used for the effect as well as the candle matching the lyrics of the song at the time so i wanted it to be prominent relating to Goodwin's theory of lyrics to visuals.
Adjusted Overlay
Transition
This effect is another example of an overlay however it differs as i changed the scaling and positioning of certain clips to created a different effect. I used the same footage placed over each other creating an overlay effect however as it was the same footage it was not seen with the same position and scaling. I changed the positioning and scaling through the effects control panel with positioning of 960 and 540 as well as 100 scaling created an overlay that looks like blurred effect working alongside my urban pop genre.
Animated text alongside overlay
This effect includes animated text and regular text alongside the adjusted overlay effect used on the footage within this section of the music video. Firstly I used the text tool to type the text "With half a tank" to fit the lyrics of my music video using Goodwins theory of linking lyrics to visuals in my music video. Once I typed my text in the font 'Gill sans ultra bold'. I then put the title layer on top of the video and extended it to the time I wish which was fitting it to the music like a lyric music video would. Afterwards I went to the effects panel and searched for the 'turbulant displace' effect which is under the video effects distort section and then applying that effect to the texts layer. Once I applied the effect i went to the effects control panel to make adjustments to the text making it as effective as possible with the use of key frames. Firstly using offset and adding a key frame at the end of the clip increasing or decreasing the value of the offset moving the keyframe closer to the beginning of the video and repeating this step as much as I want to make the text movement more visible and exaggerated. The higher the value of the offset more the text will move as well changing the values of the complexity and evolution panel. I did this with both "half a tank" and "and a empty" however I used a different effect for the word "heart". I didn't use the same movement effect for heart as I wanted that word be impactful for the audience and be separate from the rest of the sentence. For the word "heart" I just used the regular text tool in the font 'Gills sans ultra bold' as well as adding a default transitions to make it appear at the time I wanted making the text layer for the word "heart" much shorter than the others. I also used the default transitions on the other text both at the beginning and the end as it made the text look more smooth when appearing on screen rather than suddenly appearing in an abrupt manor.
Blank screen cut out effects
This effect is one of the most simple effects i used in my video digitally however i feel like it is most effective in audience reactions and fitting the genre of my music video. To do this i just moved my clips so they are no longer connected on the sequence timeline creating blank black screen matching the beat. I used this effect in the beginning of my music video and towards the end when in the hotel room.
Rotation
This effect was not repeated within my music video and used only in the scene of the car park with the protagonist walking towards the camera i did this as it was a long clip and i felt like it needed to be made more interesting by introducing special effects. I did this through the use of key frames and the rotation effect in the effects control panel. I adjusted the rotation effect within each key frame making each key frame different therefore it created a rotational turbulent effect.
This effect is one of the most simple effects used in Premiere Pro it is the transition effect. To do this I right clicked the footage I have chosen to insert a transition then picked the option of apply default transition this meant the footage seamlessly linked to each other making the overall video smooth and professional.
Text
This effect is another example of a different type of text used in the music video. I used the text of "Never Enough" as it matches the lyrics within the song during the scene of the protagonist in a wooded area. I entered the text using the text tool within Premiere Pro and typing the words "Never Enough". I used the 'Gills sans ultra bold' font as well as applying the transition of cross dissolve the make the font enter and leave the screen alongside the lyrics within the song in an effective and intriguing way.
Text
Another example of text used in the music video was during the scene of the protagonist male and female by the river in the wooded area as it was a long clip I wanted to distort it with the use of text making the overall clip more interesting. This effect is different in the way I did each word of the sentence seperately which different effects and sizes to match the lyrics of the song. Firstly I used the text tool to create the sentence "We See A" using the 'Gill sans ultra bold' font using a cross dissolve transition both at the beginning and the end of the clip as well the sentence "We see" on top of the letter "A" as it fits within the sentence once all the words are presented on the screen. The second insert of text was the word "Storm" with the same font as the text before however a bigger size of font that could be adjusted within the effects control panel. However this part of text had a different transition at the beginning of the clip which was the 'Iris round transition' and the transition at the end was the 'Cross dissolve' used in the previous clips. The third use of text in this clip was the sentence "Closing in" the font was the same however the size differed as it was larger than the sentence "We see a" but smaller than the word "Storm" which was all done within the effects control panel. All together this made a clip that had different aspects of the lyrics coming in separately to make the overall sentence. The whole text left the screen at the same time with the same transition of 'cross dissolve'.
Different coloured text.
The text used in the arcade scene within my music video of the shot of the slot machine is different to the other placements of text used as it displays different colours of both red and white. The first insert of text was "dancing with the" using the text tool with the font 'Gills sans ultra bold' and the colour white in front of the chosen the chosen footage as well as entering onto the screen using the 'cross dissolve' default transition. The second insert of text with the word "Devil" using the same font and size however it did not have a transition and is the colour red this is how the abruptness and harshness of the word "Devi".
Ending credits
The first effect i used in my music video was the ending credits. My titles stated "Directed and edited by" , "Holly Saunders" , "Featuring" and the logo of the artist M-Sea. With three separate title pages i created on premiere pro. I used of myself at the director and the footage of the artist of the music video. Importing the chosen footage into Premiere and placed it on the V1 layer of my sequence. However the logo for the artist M-Sea was used inserted as an image opposed to using the text tool as it was a PNG file it fitted in front of the black screen in a professional manor. As well as the last segment of the video which is a full screen of the production company logo which enters using a cross dissolve transition and fills the screen with a PNG file.
